Baccarat has been a casino card game for many years and it is believed to have come from Italy and eventually showed up in France during the years of 1483-1498 when Charles VIII of France ruled. The game can be related to Basset and Faro. There are several versions of the game that are considered acceptable variants. They include:
- Baccarat chemin de fer
- Baccarat banque
- Punto Banco (American baccarat)
In chemin de fer and banque the players have some choices they may make in the game, which results in a game of skill rather than just a game of chance. In punto banco there is no strategy or skill that is involved and the game is truly a game of chance.
There are only three options in baccarat. They include banker, player, or tie. It is important to keep in mind that the term player does not relate to a specific person playing and the term banker does not relate to the house. These are simply betting options for the players.
