Six full decks of cards are used for baccarat chemin de fer. The cards are all shuffled together and must have the same pattern. The players all sit around the table and in the center of the table is where the used cards are placed. Should the players question where they are sitting it is decided by drawing. The person who draws the first place will be seated on the croupier’s right hand. Then, the rest of the players will follow in order.
The cards will be shuffled by the croupier and then they are passed around to the other players with everyone having the right to shuffle them. Once the cards have made their way around the table they are then shuffled by the croupier again. Then, once they are shuffled they are given to the player on the left of the croupier to cut. Then, the croupier will take a manageable stack of cards from the top of the deck and hand them to the player to his right. He will be the dealer for the time being, or the “banker.” All of the other players are considered punters.
The dealer will then place his bet in front of him, which is the amount he is willing to risk and then all of the other players will make their bets. Any punter may call “banco”, starting with the punter to the right of the dealer. This simply means to play against the stakes of the dealer. If no punter chooses to call banco then the players will place their bets in front of them. Should the total of the bets placed by the players not equal the bank then the other people standing around the table not playing may choose to make a stake. If the amount bet is as much or more than what is in the bank then the punter that is closest to the banker will have the preference. The banker may choose to decline any amount that exceeds the amount of the bank.
Four cards will be dealt face down by the banker. The first card is for the punters and dealt to the right. The second card is dealt to himself and then the third card to the punters and the fourth card to the dealer again. The player that has the highest bet represents all of the punters. If there are two punters that have the same stake then the first player in rotation will represent the punters. Each player will then look at the cards. If either has a score of 8, or the highest of 9, then the score is announced and the game is over. Should the banker have a better score then the punter’s stakes are taken by the bank. If the punter has a better score than the banker then all of the punters will be paid the amount of his stake.
Then, the bets are made again and the game starts over. Should the banker be the winner then he will deal again. Otherwise, the cards will be passed to the next player who will then become the banker.
If neither party turns his cards over this means that neither one scored an eight or a nine. In this situation a third card must be offered by the banker. If the punter has baccarat, which is a score of 0, or 1-4 then he will accept the card by saying “yes’ or “card” while the third card is dealt face up. If he has a score of 6 or 7 then he will have to refuse the card that is offered. Players may not accept cards against the established rules and may actually be fined for doing so if a loss occurs. Only when the punter has a score of 5 can he decide whether to take a card or not. He does not need to be advised or have anyone make his decision for him.
At this point it is the banker’s turn to decide whether or not to draw a card. Much of his decision is based on the cards he holds, the cards drawn by the punter, and what he might imagine of how the other is playing the game. If the punter was hesitant this is frequently a sign that the original score was a five because this meant the punter could either take another card or hold. Sometimes a hesitation is on purpose to confuse the banker. The banker will then decide on how to play his hand, expose his cards, and the winner will be called. Ties do not win or lose however in most cases the stakes will stay in place for the next hand.
If the banker wins then he cannot withdraw his winnings because they will go to the bank to increase the balance. If the banker wants to retire at any point he can simply say “I pass the deal.” In this case the other players in order will have the option of taking over the deal. However whoever takes the deal over will have to start the bank at the same level that the last dealer left it at. If there is no other player that wants to place that much money in the bank then the deal will be passed to the next player to the right of the last dealer and he can start the bank at the level he wants. The last banker will now become the last player in the rotation.
When a player goes bank and loses then they may choose to do so again on their next hand unless the deal was passed on to a different player at the table.
Once the first deck of cards has been depleted then a new batch will be taken by the croupier and the player to his left will cut them. Then, this player will hand them back to the banker. In order for a deal to be valid then there may not be fewer than seven cards in the dealer’s hand. If the cards do go below this amount then they are thrown in the middle and the croupier will take a new supply of cards.
